When I was flying through the Kimberley region last year, I realised I had to come back.

The scenery was spectacular from the air – the changing red shades and shapes of the mountain ranges, and untouched wilderness with periodic traces of human inhabitants, only accessible by air, or a long and tough 4wd journey.

The people are a different breed. They are tough and resourceful, with a willingness to help when needed.

On this adventure, we will be catching up with some of the people that helped us on the On a Wing & a Chair Around Australia Flight. It will be great to be able to sit down with them and have a beer, instead of running off to organise the next day’s flying.

But I also have unfinished business. Due to bad weather (thunderstorms resulting in possible death) during the Around Australia Flight, the team and I had to fly inland – instead of the coast – to get from Kununurra to Derby, WA. This time, I want to have another go at the leg that I missed out on, and so does the team.

This adventure will begin at Tooradin, working our way through central Australia, over Lake Eyre, Uluru, the Bungle Bungles, Kununurra, around the coast of the Kimberley to Broome, then across the very remote deserts of Western Australia and back home.

4 Deserts Run Route

We will be staying in one of the most remote cattle stations in Australia, Suplejack Downs Station, on the edge of the Tanami Desert, and Drysdale River Station in the Kimberley.

The team includes Bob and Michael from the Around Australia Flight in the big Piper Lance aircraft.

Myriam is the newest member of the team and will fly with the boys. Myriam is French , and hasn’t done any serious flying before – hope she doesn’t get air sick!

Linda, my wife,  was the Project Coordinator on the Around Australia Flight. This time, Linda  will be flying with me, providing she doesn’t vomit in my plane! Not pleasant in the small confines. We will be stocking plenty of Kwells and sick bags!
